Mulching mowers have only really been adopted as an acceptable method of grass cutting in recent years.
Pursist would insist that shredding grass mowing's and distributing the clippings over the surface only serves to increase the thatch layer, invite weeds and moss and generally deteriorate the quality of the sward.
The reality is something different. Grass leaf blades hold a high proportion of water and once detached from the root will shrivel in size quite considerably. Worm and insect activity will further break down the organic matter.
