The benefits of laying big roll turf versus laying conventional turf rolls.
There is no doubt about it that advances in technology has made the life of a landscaper or amateur gardener much easier.
For example, when I started my career as an apprentice greenkeeper in 1979 we were still using a turf spade, turf box and cutter to lift, size and grade all of our turf, from our on-site turf nursery.
It was tough back breaking work and because the turf box was only 18 inches by inches in size, each turf had to be painstakingly processed. It took a long time to lay turf back then.
However We also started to hire in a Ransommes mechanical turf cutter. This machine made life a lot easier because it could cut the turf (provided the soil was stone free and there were not too many hollows in the ground surface) at a consistent thickness.
We could then cut the turf at a length to suit us and then roll it up: there was a tendency to make the rolls too big and heavy though.
