Climate change seems to appear in every other news bulletin on the television at the moment as the world gears up to tackle environmental challenges.
Oil and fossil fuels are very much a source of pollution and we are seeing a return to sustainable products such as wood as a fuel - once again, wood burning stoves are becoming features of modern day homes and it's not just for aesthetics either.
Manufacturers are catering for ever need and making log-splitters much more affordable too. This Einhall BT-LS 65U electric log splitter is just £229.00 - a price that easily retuned in just one season.

Chainsaws, log splitters, log splitting mauls and axes are really hot and I think that people are coming to realise that there is an alternative to oil and gas.

I don't just love Christmas for the presents, turkey and rest; I also love the little rituals that go with it like getting the logs ready to last the week.
Every Christmas, for as long as I have had a wood burning stove or an open fire, I have spent a leisurely day (sometimes more) splitting logs on Christmas Eve.
This year has turned out a little different because the job is already done - having spent two evenings in the woods cutting down dead oak's that can just be cut - ready to burn.

Splitting logs isn't exactly rocket science but there is a bit of a knack to it. One you have your log round on the splitting block, it is necessary to nibble around the edges, splitting with the grain, taking off fire size logs.
Don't try to split through the middle of the round is anymore than eighteen inches across - especially if there are some knots (lateral branches).
Something that is not all that well known is you don't actually need a sharp axe for the job. Whilst a wedge shaped blade is needed, the actually edge that comes into contact with the wood can actually be blunt.

This THLS horizontal log splitter is the hottest seller of the Mow Direct range and as a previous owner of a lawn flight petrol log splitter, I can understand and tell you why.
Now, if you are only consuming a cubic metre or two a year of logs then forget buying a log splitter in the first place because it will take you ten years to break even. You are better off buying from the wood merchants.
If you are consuming 5-10 cubic metres a during the winter then this is a no brainer and the oney can be re-couped in a single year - unless of course you need the exercise and the therapy of splitting with a big lump axe to relieve the stress of a busy week in the office?
