Splitting logs isn't exactly rocket science but there is a bit of a knack to it. One you have your log round on the splitting block, it is necessary to nibble around the edges, splitting with the grain, taking off fire size logs.
Don't try to split through the middle of the round is anymore than eighteen inches across - especially if there are some knots (lateral branches).
Something that is not all that well known is you don't actually need a sharp axe for the job. Whilst a wedge shaped blade is needed, the actually edge that comes into contact with the wood can actually be blunt.
The momentum of the swing and the timing, coupled with the weight of the hedge will resonate through the wood and force the log to split. Sometimes, the log will not actually split where it comes into contact but will migrate to the weakest flaw.
Using a maul is the right tools for the job and believe me, you will be less fatigued than you would if you wielded a light headed axe.
